Christmas in Brittany.
Across the hills of Brittany, the fogs disperse as the bells ring out midnight mass in the distance. The songs of the Bretons resound in the cottages and the mystery of Christmas night is perpetuated...

In Breton songs of oral tradition, it is the word that gives the verbal rhythm. Moreover, thanks to their modal character (a framework of fixed notes, from which results a specific colour, a musical "world"), they lend themselves very well to plainchant (a cappella singing, monodic, without time measures) and to their accompaniment by medieval musical instruments with a different tuning from our modern instruments.

Noël en Bretagne.
Sur les collines bretonnes, les brumes se dissipent tandis que les cloches sonnent au loin la messe de minuit. Les chants bretons résonnent dans les chaumières et le mystère de la nuit de Noël se perpétue...

Dans les chants bretons de tradition orale, c'est le mot qui donne le rythme verbal. De plus, grâce à leur caractère modal (un cadre de notes fixes, d'où résulte une couleur spécifique, un "monde" musical), ils se prêtent très bien au plain-chant (chant a cappella, monodique, sans mesure de temps) et à leur accompagnement par des instruments de musique médiévaux à l'accord différent de celui de nos instruments modernes.
